Welcome to the gardens of Arcadia! As your eighteenth-century counterparts discovered, garden visiting was an enjoyable way to spend time, if one had the money and leisure to develop the taste for such occupations. However, garden visiting was not always plain sailing. At the very least there may be tickets to buy or knowledge to be obtained about when a garden might be accessible to visitors.

We hope that this digital visiting experience will allow you to enjoy the sights and smells of the gardens through the descriptions of eighteenth-century visitors, without such limitations or having to endure the inconvenience of travelling in a cramped coach or staying at a less than salubrious inn.
